1. Your budget - Know how much you can afford to spend or put down and also know what type of payment you can afford for the vehicle and for your insurance.

2. Your needs - Your basic need is transportation and you might have a need of 4 doors or something of that nature as well. Know what you need and what you want and separate the two.

3. Have your mechanic ready - Always get the vehicle inspected thoroughly by your own mechanic so that you are sure you are getting a vehicle that is in good shape.

4. Shop around - Look as at least 5 different vehicles from 5 different car lots or owners before you decide what you might purchase. Once you narrow it down to a couple you can have your mechanic look them over.

5. Sleep on it before purchasing - We always make better decisions when we let them sit in our brains for a little while and we wait to purchase. This is a big decision so give it a night to settle in before you purchase.

6. Negotiate price - Now you can go and negotiate price with the dealer before you purchase.
